Augusta Curiel Fotografie in Suriname 1904-1937
Suriname, oude fotografie Van Dijk, J. e.a., AUGUSTA CURIEL Fotografie in Suriname, Amsterdam 2009. Hardcover 24 x 30 cm. 192 pag. met 238 foto's.
"From 1904 until her death in 1937 Augusta Curiel was, along with her sister Anna, the most important photographer in Suriname. Anyone who wanted their photograph taken came to her: individuals, organizations and institutions. Her photos appeared, often anonymously, in numerous publications. The book is the result of an intensive collaboration between the Museum in Paramaribo, Surinam and the Tropical Museum in Amsterdam.
The pictures of Paramaribo are a walk through the city as it looked in the early twentieth century; you will find back many familiar places, but it offers also many amazing town faces. Many photos of the plantations, the interior and its inhabitants. This is the first book devoted to the work of Augusta Curiel, the principal photographer of her time in Suriname. Historically this is a significant photo collection, also a visual contribution to the socio-economic history of Suriname."

Different truths. Ethnomedicine in postcards
oude fotografie DE SMET, P.A.G.M., Different truths. Ethnomedicine in postcards, Amsterdam 2009. Softcover 30 x 24 cm. 216 pag. met ca. 250 afb.
"All over the world, native peoples have been looking for ways to prevent illness and to cope with such misfortune, should it happen to them anyway. This book explores supernatural and natural healing practices all over the world. It illustrates the global importance of these themes by showing a selection of 270 colonial postcards in their original colours, from the early days of the 20th century. These cards are a rich source of visual information about native health and healing, which has been largely overlooked so far. The author's examination is guided by the principle that native therapies are often directed at the perceived cause of an illness. This cause is often personal in tribal settings (e.g., an evil sorcerer, spirit or ancestor) and impersonal in great medical systems (e.g., an imbalance of basic body components). The book also covers the portrayal of Western folk medicine, colonial health care and tropical pathology on early postcards. The latter topic invites the modern reader to work out his or her personal response to these often penetrating images.
Before reviewing postcard images of native healers and healing methods, the book investigates their meanings for those who produced and collected them in the past and for those who collect and study them today. This introduction makes clear that colonial postcards reveal as much about Ourselves as about the Others. It also cautions that pictorial postcards may be less truthful."

Exotic Postcards. The lure of Distant Lands
Azië, Afrika, Oceanië, Postcards Beukers,A.(p.Theroux intr.), Exotic Postcards. The lure of Distant Lands, Londen 2007. Hardcover 26 x 26 cm. 208 pag. met 200 kleurafb.
"Haunting postcard images of the non-Western world from a century ago. The antique postcards depicted here were acquired in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by Western tourists, business people, traders, and colonialists. The circumstances in which the cards were sent, and the details of those who sent them, are largely lost. Yet the audience for collecting them has enjoyed a spectacular growth in recent years and includes not only those with the collecting instinct or the desire to travel but also artists, photographic historians, fashion and jewelry specialists, and designers everywhere. Once it was believed that by taking someone's portrait you stole that person's soul. Here, the human subjects have a powerful presence because they express a deep-seated connection with the land and customs that gave them their identities. Their stories are implicit in their eyes, their costumes, and their postures. Reproduced with complete fidelity, these postcards take us on a magical journey across the world in five travelogues, depicting Asia, the Arab Lands, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania."
