BERNATZIK. South Pacific
Pacific, oude fotografie CONRU,K. & COLEMAN, A.D., BERNATZIK. South Pacific, Milaan 2002. Hardcover 25 x 30,5 cm. 250 pag. met 150 zwart-wit foto's.
CONTENT:
Hugo A. Bernatzik travelled for over a year, between 1932 and 1933, to the Solomon Islands, New Guinea and Bali. His lively and fascinating account of the trip and his observations on myths, customs and traditions of the people he encountered were published as a book: Südsee: Travels in the South Seas, soon after translated into English (1935).
A large and careful selection of the best photographs, reproduced here in duotone and in large format, has been made for South Pacific . Bernatzik's images are always informative. The photographs depict fascinating actions such as the turtle hunt in the Solomon Islands reef or seafaring on an oroum, a Papuan double canoe. Everyday life in villages and the habits proper to each particular group come to life in the photographs. Finally, a series of portraits gives us an idea of the adornments worn by the people of the South Seas.

Bilder aus dem Paradies Fotografie aus Samoa 1875-1925
Pacific, oude / koloniale fotografie ENGELHARD & MESENHÖLLER, Bilder aus dem Paradies Koloniale Fotografie aus Samoa, 1875-1925, Köln 1995. Softcover 21,5 x 27 cm. 176 pag. met 80 zwart-wit foto's.

Headhunters from the swamp
Nieuw Guinea, oude fotografie CORBEY, R., Headhunters from the swamps. The Marind Anim of New Guinea seen by the missionaries of the Sacred heart, 1905-1927, Leiden 2007. Softcover 21 x 24 cm. 134 pag. met ca. 60 photo's. Tekst in het Engels
CONTENT:
In 1905, the Tilburg Missionaries of the Sacred Heart established their first mission post among the Marind Amin on the southwest coast of New Guinea. They were to be the last direct witnesses of an ancient cultural tradition about to perish. They recorded the tribe's complex cosmology, initiation rites, art, and headhunting practices, both in writing and through photographs. Bewilderment and fascination, burnings and research punctuated relations between the priests and the indigenous population. Raymond Corbey has been granted permission to publish for the first time a group of remarkable photographs taken from the archives of the Tilburg mission. These, along with fifteen photographs from the archives of anthropologist Paul Wirz, who visited the Marind Amin twice, provide a detailed look at the period from 1905 to 1925 during which contact occurred.
