The invention of photography was first announced in Istanbul's local Takvim-i Vekayi newspaper on 28th October 1839, but travelers were already photographing the empire's landscape as early as 1840.
Sultan Abdulhamid II, who reigned from 1876 to 1909, was known as a conservative monarch that was also open to technological development. He was known to have a profound interest in photography, as evidenced by his extensive archives and his proficiency in its techniques. The municipality of Istanbul has just published a three-volume book of photos taken during his reign which will provide a first chance for the public to view previously unseen photos from the end of the 19th century and the turn of the 20th century, as most had only been accessible to archivists until now.

Portrait Photographs from Isfahan 1920-1950
Iran, fotografie PARISA DAMANDAN, Portrait Photographs from Isfahan Faces in transition 1920-1950, Londen 2004. Softcover 24 x 30 cm. 263 pag. met 269 zwart-wit foto's.
"Parisa Damandan spent over ten years accumulating an impressive collection of pioneering early twentieth-century photographs from her hometown of Isfahan. Recently emancipated women posing in various state of dress; Polish war refugees on their tortuous journey home after fleeing the Nazis; men in fashionable hats or in traditional turbans and cloaks - these portraits offer a window on the changing face of Iranian society during a period of transition from a traditional to a modern culture.Alongside these images are essays on the development of portraiture in Isfahan, the social dimensions of portrait photography in Iran and the power of the gaze. The establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979 meant women were forced to wear the hijab and photographs of them uncovered were forbidden. As a result, many photographers' studios were burnt to the ground, while remaining archives of invaluable glass-plate negatives were left to moulder in attics."

Roger Fenton Pasha and Bayadere
Oriënt, oude fotografie BALDWIN, R. Roger Fenton Pasha and Bayadere, Los Angeles 1996. Softcover 19 x 24 cm. 112 pg. met 58 afb. waarvan 20 in kleur.
"Roger Fenton"s photograph Pasha and Bayadere is a fascinating image in its own right and is an expression of a more general Orientalist craze that grew steadily stronger during the nineteenth century in Europe. In his rich and detailed study, Baldwin explains how this image of a seated man and a dancing woman embodies themes and motifs that can be found in the work of nineteenth-century artists from Eugene Delacroix to John Frederick Lewis to Alfred Lord Tennyson. He has also brought to light significant new information about the life and career of Fenton, the important Victorian photographer best known for his photographs of the Crimean War."
