VAN DER WAL, D., Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje: The first Western Photograppher in Mecca, 1884-1885, Amsterdam 2011. Hard cover 21,5 x 27 cm. 55 pag. with 35 photo’s. Vol.9 of Rijksmuseum studies in Photography.

In de 19de eeuw was het oriëntalisme enorm populair. Niet alleen bij fotografen, ook bij kunstenaars en onderzoekers. Maar er was één stad waar niet-moslims niet naartoe konden: Mekka, de stad die door moslims eenmaal bezocht moet worden. Tussen 1503 en 1885 lukte het maar vijftien westerlingen - vermomd - toegang te krijgen. Als eerste westerling slaagde islamist Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje erin foto's te nemen in de 'verboden stad'. Daarvoor bekeerde hij zich tot de islam, zodat hij ook kon deelnemen aan de hadj. Hij werd op slag wereldberoemd toen zijn fotoboeken verschenen. Voor het eerst wordt nu duidelijk welke hindernissen Snouck Hurgronje moest overwinnen om zijn foto's te kunnen maken. De foto's in zijn eerste boek maakte hij zelf, het tweede is gevuld met foto's door zijn assistent, de Mekkaanse dokter 'Abd al-Ghaffâr. Diens aandeel in Snouck Hurgronjes boeken en hun bijzondere samenwerking was niet eerder bestudeerd. Een hoogtepunt is een uitzonderlijke, zesdelige geheime opname gemaakt met een zelfgemaakte 'detective camera'. Hij werd gemaakt volgens de 'revolvermethode', een glasplaat die doordraaide zodat zonder wissel zes opnamen achter elkaar gemaakt konden worden.
