Geisha A photographic history
Japan, oude fotografie S.B.BURNS & E.BURNS, Geisha A photographic history 1872-1912, New York 2006. Hardcover, 26 x 33 cm. 120 pag. met 100 oude kleurenfoto's.
"Japanese geisha and courtesans intrigue and fascinate Westerners. During the mid-nineteenth century, Japan opened its doors to the world and became an essential destination for travelers. Tourists desired images of landscapes and traditional Japanese culture, which Japanese photographers provided. They created souvenir albums consisting of hand-colored photographs individually chosen by the tourist. Many are so beautifully painted that they challenge modern sensibilities familiar with color photography. The photographic conventions were inspired by the aesthetics of the noted colored woodblock print medium of ukiyo-e and the privately published surimono. These works depicted the "floating world"-courtesans, geisha, and entertainments-which also were intriguing subject matter for tourists."

Japanese cinema
Japan, filmgeschiedenis GALBRAITH IV, S.& DUNCAN,E.[ed.], Japanese cinema, Keulen 2009[Taschen]. Hard cover 24 x 29,5 cm. 192 pag. met talloze afb. in kleur en zwart-wit. Tekst in het Engels. English text.
"This book explores the work of the greatest Japanese filmmakers. Until very recently, the western world has viewed Japanese cinema through a very narrow prism. For years, Westerners interested in Japanese film have had to content themselves with the collected works of Akira Kurosawa, a spotty sampling of films by Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu, gobs of anime, and badly dubbed monster movies. Many great filmmakers like Mikio Naruse and Keisuke Kinoshita have remained unknown in the West, and musicals and comedies are hardly known outside Asia. This volume will help set the record straight, illustrating the history of Japanese cinema with vivid posters and stunning photography."

The History of Japanese photography
Japan, oude fotografie WILKES TUCKER, A, e.a., The History of Japanese photography, Houston 2003. Hardcover 31 x 25 cm. 404 pag. met 356 afb.
"Winner of the Maine Photographic Workshops 2003 Golden Light Award for best Historical book; Selected as one of the "Best Photography Books of 2003" by photo-eye Books; Winner of the 2003 Professional/Scholarly Publishing Division Annual Awards Competition in the Arts category; Finalist for Independent Publisher Book Awards 2004 in the Performing Arts category; Won Special Commendation for the 2004 Kraszna-Krausz Prize; Named an outstanding Book of 2003 by CameraArts Magazine; Winner of the 2005 International Award of the Photographic Society of Japan
Over the past 150 years, Japanese photographers have created an impressive body of work that ranges from dignified imperial photographs to sweeping urban panoramas, from early ethereal landscapes to modern urban mysteries. Despite the richness, significance, and variety of this work, however, it has largely been neglected in Western histories of photography. This gorgeous and groundbreaking book-the first comprehensive account of Japanese photography from its inception in the mid-nineteenth century to the present day-reveals to English-speaking audiences the importance and beauty of this art form. Written by a team of distinguished Japanese and Western scholars, this book establishes that photography began to play a vital role in Japanese culture soon after its introduction to Japan in the 1850s. Illustrated essays discuss the medium's evolution and aesthetic shifts in relation to the nation's historical and cultural developments; the interaction of Japanese photographers with Western photographers; the link between photography and other Japanese art forms; and photography as a record and catalyst of change. Handsomely designed and generously illustrated with beautiful duotone and color images, the book emphasizes not only the unique features of Japanese photography but also the ways it has influenced and been influenced by the country's culture and society."

The Samurai Film
Japan, film SIVER,A., The SAMURAI film[expanded & revised edition], New York 2005. Soft cover 20,5 x 25,5 cm. 320 pag. met talloze afb. in zwart-wit en kleur.
"The image of a lone hero, marked by a violent past and bound by honor, has exerted an endless fascination on film audiences the world over, but nowhere more than in Japan, where Samurai films have gained legions of passionate followers. Popularized and perfected by one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema, Akira Kurosawa, the themes of the Samurai film have consistently crossed over into western films, with blockbuster success in recent years of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Last Samurai. Long regarded as one of the world's most astute film analysts, Alain Silver deconstructs the key aspects of this vital film genre, from its focus on violence and death as a means of understanding life and the significance of swords and weaponry to key elements and motifs, such as hara-kiri, rebellion, and nostalgia for Japan's feudal past. With comprehensive filmographies of the major directors and films, a survey of the history and myths of the Samurai, a glossary of Japanese terms, and with more than two hundred photos."
