Assignment Shanghai. Photographs on the eve of Revolution
China, oude fotografie WAKEMAN, C. & LIGHT, K., Assignment Shanghai. Photographs on the eve of Revolution, Los Angelos 2003. Hardcover, 24 x 35 cm. 130 pag. met een honderdtal zwart-wit foto's van Jack Birns.
CONTENT:
Shipping out to China in December 1947 with three ten-year-old German cameras and a plum assignment from Life magazine, Jack Birns was fulfilling a boyhood dream. The reality was something else: refugees and prostitutes, soldiers and beggars, street executions and urban protests photographed in difficult and often dangerous circumstances amidst the poverty, corruption, and chaos of an expanding civil war. By then the ruling Nationalist Party had been battling the Communist threat for more than two decades, and Birns focused his camera on the human drama unfolding as war pressed ever closer to the country's financial, cultural, and commercial capital. His effort to show China's misery up close ran afoul of Time-Life publisher Henry R. Luce's fervent anti-communism, and for half a century many of these historic photographs lay unpublished in Time-Life's archives. Printed here for the first time, they offer a graphic vision of a great city, Shanghai, poised on the precipice of political revolution.
Seen through the lens of hindsight, Birns's photographs give us a sense not only of what China was like more than fifty years ago, but also of why the warfare, weariness, and desperation of the time proved such fertile soil for communist revolution. Today these everyday scenes of ordinary people-pedicab drivers, street vendors, bar girls, police, politicians, prisoners-tell a story of national resilience and dignity in the midst of enveloping poverty, repression, and fear

Brush and Shutter Early Photography in China
China, oude fotografie CODY,J.W. & TERPAK, F, Brush and Shutter Early Photography in China, Los Angelos 2011. Hard cover 28 x 27 cm. 220 pag. with 136 photo's of which 61 in colour.
CONTENT:
Contemporary Chinese photography has received increasing attention both within China and beyond; however, the origin of photography in China is not fully understood.
Brush & Shutter: Early Photography in China takes its name from the way that the medium of photography was learned and readily adapted by Chinese export painters, who grafted this new technology onto traditional conventions.
Before the invention of photography in 1839, images of China for export were painted in oil and gouache as well as on popular blue-and-white porcelain. Illustrating a limited repertoire of subjects-tea gardens, pagodas, and fanciful rural scenes-a stereotype of China emerged that was often repeated by photographers, who found a ready market among Western buyers.
In this regard, photographers were following a tradition in the West-which blossomed in a European craze for chinoiserie during the 17th and 18th centuries-of reproducing stereotypical images about China on porcelain, wallpaper, furniture, and tapestries; however, photography in China also broke from that tradition of reproduction by capturing images that surprised viewers.

CHINA Caught in Time
China, oude fotografie NAUMKIN,V., CHINA Caught in Time, Reading 1995. Hardcover[without dust jacket], 22 x 27 cm. 160 pag.met 162 zwart-wit foto's. Oude foto's over China uit Russische bronnen.
In 1874 an expedition set out overland from Saint Petersburg, to travel through China. Their route took them to the important cities of Peking and Shanghai as well as to unexplored interior regions, and culminated in a perilous return to Russia via part of the Silk Road on a route banned to foreigners. This was one of the first such expeditions involving a photographer. He had a formidable task - all the plates were made of glass, had to be developed immediately after exposure, and then be transported throughout the remainder of the trip. In all he took some 200 photographs, of extraordinary quality, over 160 of which are reproduced in this book. It is a fascinating record of China 120 years ago. This series presents selections of 19th century and very early 20th century photographs held in St Petersburg archives. The photographs are intriguing as early examples of the art, but also as a unique record of their times. The photographs in the series are taken from three main archives, all of which are members of the Russian Academy of Sciences: the Institute of Material Culture; the Institute of Oriental Studies and the Russian Geographical Society.
